5 Self-Care Tips for When You’re Feeling Down

Is it just me or does this combination of daylight savings, cold weather, and the end of the holiday season have you feeling down? That and the fact that I am now suffering from an existential pre-midlife crisis isn’t helping. But feelings in life are fleeting, and without sadness, we wouldn’t know what happiness is, and although it’s odd, I embrace the bad days. So to get you out of that slump, I’ve compiled a list of five self-care tips for when you’re feeling down.

1) Take a Bath

Turn off your phone, disconnect from the world for at least 30 minutes, and light up your favorite candle!

2) Treat Yo’ Self

Whenever you feel sad, buy that shirt you’ve been eyeing or treat yourself to that meal you’ve wanted to try. Even changing up your hairstyle or getting a massage is sure to bring some joy to your life.

3) Relax Your Mind

The name of my blog is The Many Concerns of Nicole, so if you haven’t figured it out, I’m one of those people who overthinks everything.

And over-thinking isn’t all that good for you. It can cause depression, anxiety, and panic attacks.

Relieve yourself of every bad thought that is consuming your brain. I know we’re all sick of Frozen at this point, but let it go.

4) Write It Down

Journaling is a great way to keep your thoughts organized. And you don’t have to worry about grammar or punctuation. Take about 10-15 minutes just to jot down what’s on your mind.

Writing or typing can help you work things out that you might have kept bottled up otherwise.

5) Step Away From Social Media

Seeing that your tenth Instagram friend got engaged or that Honey Boo Boo’s mom got a boyfriend before you isn’t all that great of a feeling. Scrolling through an endless feed of people kicking it back in Cabo also won’t make you happy when you’re already down in the dumps.

And it’s not healthy to sit there and compare your life to everyone else’s. Take a break from social media for a few hours or a few days and focus on you until your mood improves.

So there you have it, five self-care tips for when you’re feeling down. You don’t have to drain your bank account to make a life upgrade. It can be as simple as buying that donut you’ve been craving or disconnecting from the world for a bit.
