I used to think people who were “good” couldn’t possibly be racist but racism isn’t about being “good” or “bad.” You can still be racist even if you’re not using racial slurs or physically attacking someone. It took me a while to start to feel the effects that daily microaggressions and casual racism had on me. As a Chinese and Salvadorian person, I knew when someone was being racist and discriminatory against Hispanic people. They’d make immigration jokes or try to lump Hispanic people into being Mexican. That I was very aware of. But I never realized the harm that slight comments and jabs about Asians, specifically Chinese people had on me. I had friends who would call me “exotic” and tell me that it was a compliment. And friends who would tell me that Asian men were ugly, feminine and unattractive. I felt as if though I was conditioned to believe these things because it was something I was hearing all the time. I even questioned whether it was racist or not when someone accused me of having COVID. IT IS RACIST! I think it’s time for people to stop with the white tears and get uncomfortable talking about racism. Especially white people and white-passing people. Your discomfort is nothing compared to people experiencing racism.

I’m talking about my experiences because it’s therapeutic but it isn’t my job to educate you. If you stand in solidarity with the AAPI community you’ll speak up for us. Don’t laugh when someone at work makes a casually racist “joke.” Don’t let your friends feel alone when they tell you that someone accused them of having COVID. Call out your friends or family when they say something racist. Don’t deny people’s experiences with racism. If someone tells you that YOU said something racist, take the time to understand that what you said/did was wrong. “Good” people can still say and do racist things, it’s up to us to dig deep and do the work to become anti-racist.

Asian Americans and Asians worldwide have experien Asian Americans and Asians worldwide have experienced an onslaught of attacks during the pandemic due to conservative outlets referring to COVID-19 as the “China virus.” But before people started using hateful words like “Kung Flu” or “Chinese virus” it’s important to remember that anti-Asian racism has existed for hundreds of years which has led to continued repercussions on Asian people worldwide.

The reason hate continues to exist and has now escalated into elderly Asian Americans being attacked is because of daily microaggressions and racist comments that continue to go unchecked and unchallenged. And public figures in the media play a large role in downplaying and normalizing anti-Asian sentiment.

Why is it so important that you "live your life" while hundreds of thousands of people are dying from COVID-19?
One person dies from COVID every 10 minutes in Los Angeles. So is it still important for you to hold your crappy little party right now? Or is it only okay because no one invited is Chinese?
In 2021 I will not be apologizing for how others make me feel about the anti-Asian sentiment that has increased due to the pandemic. After all, even if you don't see me as Chinese, I am! I will not be silent about the racism that I endure and I don't have to hold space for people who don't see how they have hurt me.
